Streptococcus pneumoniae causes a wide range of diseases, including middle ear infection (acute otitis media), pneumonia, and various forms of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), such as meningitis and bloodstream infection (bacteremia and sepsis). Pneumococcal infection can be severe and potentially fatal. Pneumococci are commonly found in the nose and throat of healthy individuals, especially children. Transmission occurs primarily through droplets generated by coughing and sneezing, close contact with infected individuals, or contact with contaminated objects. PREVNAR 20 expands on PREVNAR 13® profile (1, 3, 4, 5, 6A, 6B, 7F, 9V, 14, 18C, 19A, 19F, and 23F) by including seven new serotypes (8, 10A, 11A, 12F, 15B, 22F, and 33F) associated with invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), high case-fatality rates, antibiotic resistance, and/or meningitis. It thus provides additional protection.
